Unopened, a Korean product carries roughly 6–12 extra months past its printed date, and that range is the brands’ own guidance, not law.
Opened and already past the date — that one stops today, because air contact has already happened and there is no way to reset it.
Two cases, two answers.
The 30–36 month sealed shelf life and the printed ‘까지’ date both assume the product stayed sealed and stored at room temperature.
Once opened, bacteria and oxygen start working, which is why the PAO number exists at all.
The rule most people miss is that the two clocks run at the same time, and the earlier one wins.
A bottle opened June 1, 2026 with a 12M mark must go by June 1, 2027 even if the ‘까지’ line says 2028.12.31.
If it is sealed and a few months past date, using it up is a reasonable gamble — for eye-area or lip products, or anything going on broken skin, throw it out instead.

No date, just ’12M’? Reading PAO symbols on imported products
The open-jar symbol with ’12M’ means 12 months of use after opening, and the common figures are 6M, 12M, 24M and 36M.
A date-free import with only a PAO mark was tested to stay stable unopened for at least 30 months — under European labeling rules, the date is replaced by the PAO symbol once unopened stability exceeds 30 months.
So the missing date is a rule, not an omission by the brand.
To find the manufacture date anyway, decode the batch code: the alphanumeric engraving on the tube tail or base.
Contacting the brand’s customer service with that code is the surest route, and third-party checkers like CheckFresh or CheckCosmetic can decode Korean codes as a backup.
Other symbols you may see: an hourglass next to a date means expiry in European labeling, a book icon means ‘read the insert’ and is not a date.
If an import shows only ’12M’ and no date at all, ask the brand for the manufacture date using the batch code — then count 12 months from the day you actually opened it.
How long each category lasts after opening
‘제조’ is the manufacture date and ‘까지’ is the unopened expiration — same sticker, opposite meanings, and reading ‘제조’ as an expiry is the most common mistake.
So ‘제조 2026.05.27’ on a serum you just bought is good news, not a warning.
Korean labeling rules require either an expiration date, or a PAO period printed together with the manufacture date.
When only the year and month are printed, count the deadline as the last day of that month.

How to tell if it has gone bad (and when to throw it out immediately)
When the date is unknown, four checks settle it: separation, smell, color and texture.
Stop using the product at the first clear sign — smell is the fastest one, since sour, rancid-oil or crayon-like odors that were not there at opening point to ingredients breaking down.
Creams signal the same thing differently: yellow droplets beading on the surface mean the emulsion has split, and powders show an oily sheen with poor pickup on the brush.
Throw it out immediately, regardless of date, if any of these appear:
- Mold-like spots or strands on the surface or inside the container.
- A swollen tube or pouch, or gas escaping when you open it.
- Visible foreign matter or grains that were not there before.
- Repeated stinging or burning after application.
One exception before you discard a ‘separated’ product: two-layer formulas designed to be shaken before use look split on purpose, so check the container instructions first.
A true emulsion failure is clear liquid floating on top that will not re-blend after shaking.
If the check comes out ambiguous, work in this order: dates first, senses second, and for anything meant for the eye area, lips or broken skin, err toward throwing it out.
That last weighing is judgment rather than a tested rule, but it is the cheap side of the decision.
Storing it right and keeping track of the date you opened it
The label number and the real replacement window are different things, and the gap is widest on anything that touches your eye or oxidizes fast.
Vitamin C serums should be finished within about 3 months and thrown out when the color shifts from yellow to orange.
Dropper and pump-type ampoule serums are labeled 6–12M but realistically good for 3–6 months after opening, because oxidizing actives like vitamin C fade fastest.
Sunscreen may look and smell completely fine yet fail to form the UV-blocking film, so finish an opened bottle within the season.
A mascara brush goes back into the tube after touching tears and eyelid skin, which is why mascara is the one product worth swapping on a fixed 3-month schedule.
A stick lipstick can be wiped clean, so it outlasts a liquid lip whose applicator returns to the tube after lip contact.
If you cannot remember when you opened it, the earlier window wins by default.
