Korean Particles 은/는, 이/가, 을/를: Which One to Use

Most Korean particles come in two forms, and the last letter of the word decides which one you use. After a final consonant (batchim) use 은, 이, 을, 과, 이에요; after a vowel use 는, 가, 를, 와, 예요. So 책 (book) becomes 책은, 책이, 책을, but 커피 (coffee) becomes 커피는, 커피가, 커피를. 으로/로 is the exception: words ending in ㄹ take 로 (서울로, 지하철로). Type any Korean word below to get every form.

  • Korean particles change with the last letter of the word: after a final consonant use 은, 이, 을; after a vowel use 는, 가, 를.
  • Words ending in ㄹ take 로 rather than 으로: 서울로 means to Seoul and 지하철로 means by subway.
  • Before the subject particle 가, 나 becomes 내가, 저 becomes 제가, 너 becomes 네가 and 누구 becomes 누가.
  • The polite "it is" ending is 이에요 after a consonant (책이에요) and 예요 after a vowel (커피예요).

은/는 or 이/가?

Both can mark the subject, and the difference is about focus. 은/는 marks what you are talking about, often something already known or a contrast: 저는 학생이에요 (as for me, I am a student). 이/가 points at who or what, often new information or the answer to “who?”: 누가 왔어요? — 친구가 왔어요 (who came? — a friend came). As a traveller you can use either in short requests and you will be understood.

Four common words change shape before 가: 나 → 내가, 저 → 제가, 너 → 네가, 누구 → 누가. The converter knows them.

Particles after numbers

After a number, read the number in Sino-Korean and look at its last sound: 1 (일), 3 (삼), 6 (육), 7 (칠), 8 (팔), 10 (십) and 0 (영) end in a consonant; 2 (이), 4 (사), 5 (오), 9 (구) end in a vowel. So 3이에요 but 2예요, and 7로 but 3으로. The converter handles numbers too.

Use 은 after a word ending in a consonant (책은, 물은) and 는 after a word ending in a vowel (커피는, 저는). Both mark the topic.

When do I use 이 or 가?

Use 이 after a consonant (책이, 물이) and 가 after a vowel (커피가, 친구가). Exceptions: 나 → 내가, 저 → 제가, 너 → 네가, 누구 → 누가.

When do I use 을 or 를?

Use 을 after a consonant (밥을, 물을) and 를 after a vowel (커피를, 버스를).

Why is it 서울로 and not 서울으로?
