Korean Verb Conjugation: Present, Past, Future (Converter)

To say most Korean verbs politely, drop 다 and add 아요 or 어요. If the last vowel is ㅏ or ㅗ add 아요 (가다 → 가요, 앉다 → 앉아요), otherwise add 어요 (먹다 → 먹어요), and 하다 becomes 해요. For the past change 요 to ㅆ어요 (갔어요, 먹었어요); for the future add ㄹ/을 거예요 (갈 거예요, 먹을 거예요). A few verbs are irregular — 듣다 → 들어요, 덥다 → 더워요, 모르다 → 몰라요. Type any verb below, in English or Korean.

FAQ

How do you conjugate Korean verbs?

Take the stem (drop 다), then add 아요 if its last vowel is ㅏ or ㅗ and 어요 otherwise; 하다 becomes 해요. That gives the polite present tense, the form travellers use most.

How do you make the past tense in Korean?

Change the 요 of the present to ㅆ어요: 가요 → 갔어요 (went), 먹어요 → 먹었어요 (ate), 해요 → 했어요 (did).

How do you say the future in Korean?

Add ㄹ 거예요 after a vowel and 을 거예요 after a consonant: 갈 거예요 (I will go), 먹을 거예요 (I will eat).

What is the difference between 해요 and 합니다?

합니다 is the formal style used in announcements, news and service speech; 해요 is polite everyday speech. As a visitor, 해요 is right in almost every conversation.

Which Korean verbs are irregular?

The common ones end in ㅂ (덥다 → 더워요), ㄷ (듣다 → 들어요), ㅅ (짓다 → 지어요), 르 (모르다 → 몰라요) or ㅎ (그렇다 → 그래요). Many words with the same endings are regular, so check them one by one.

How do you ask politely for something in Korean?

Use the -(으)세요 form or add 주세요 to the 아/어 form: 기다리세요 (please wait), 기다려 주세요 (please wait for me). To ask permission, add 도 돼요? to the 아/어 form: 사진 찍어도 돼요? (may I take a photo?).
