How to visit a trending place in Seoul

  • Search in Korean. Copy the Korean name into Naver Map or Kakao Map — English searches often miss small places.
  • Go early or off-peak. Places that are this talked-about usually have a line at lunch, dinner and weekends.
  • Check the waiting list. Many popular places take names on a tablet at the door or through a Korean app; staff will tell you the wait.
  • Check before you go. Hours, days off and sold-out times change often — the place’s Naver Map page or Instagram is the most up to date.

How this board works

Every morning our ranking engine looks for Seoul places that Naver bloggers describe as having waiting lines, open-runs or new openings, keeps only names that at least two different bloggers mention, and checks each one against Naver’s place search — it must be a restaurant, café or bar with a Seoul address. Big franchises are left out; small chains with fewer than 10 branches are shown as one line. For each place we count, for the last 7 days, the different bloggers who wrote about it together with its neighborhood, the Korean news stories that name it and its monthly Naver searches, and compare the week with the three before. Each count is scored against the leader, and a place needs at least two kinds of evidence to be ranked (or very heavy blog talk with few sponsored posts). Posts marked as sponsored are counted separately. This is a measure of attention, not a review — we have not visited these places.

How this page works

The page is rebuilt twice a day (around 09:15 and 21:15 Korea time) and republished only when the numbers change.

FAQ

What are the most popular restaurants in Seoul right now?

By how much Koreans are writing and reading about them this week, the top places on Nov 2 are 산청숯불가든 (Sancheongsutbulgadeun) — korean bbq & meat in Jung-gu; 한정선 (Hanjeongseon) — café & desserts in Seongdong-gu; 아임도넛 (Aimdoneot) — doughnuts in Seongdong-gu. The full board of 55 places is on this page and is recounted every morning.

Is this a list of the best restaurants in Seoul?

No. It measures buzz, not taste: how many different Naver bloggers wrote about a place in the last seven days, how many Korean news stories named it, how often people search for it, and whether that is rising. A place can be talked about because of a long queue, a TV appearance or a new opening. We have not eaten there and do not rate the food.

Where is the trendiest food area in Seoul right now?

On this week’s board, Hongdae, Yeonnam & Mangwon has the most places (10 of 55). Next: Euljiro & Jung-gu (9), Jongno, Ikseon & Seochon (9).

How do I find these places? The names are in Korean.

Use the Korean name — copy it into Naver Map or Kakao Map, which work far better in Korea than Google Maps, or show it to a taxi driver. Each row has map links, the nearest subway station and a link to our route finder. The English letters under each name are only a guide to how it sounds.

Do I need to queue?

Many places on this board are known for waiting lines — that is often why people blog about them. Opening hours, reservations and waiting lists change often, so check the place’s Naver Map page or Instagram before you go.

How often is it updated?

Every day at about 6 a.m. Korea time. Places that stop being talked about drop off, and new ones appear when bloggers start writing about them.
