Seongsan Ilchulbong Sunrise 2026: Fee, Climb Time, Arrival Guide

Seongsan Ilchulbong Sunrise 2026: Fee, Climb Time, Arrival Guide

Adult entry to Seongsan Ilchulbong costs ₩5,000, and the climb to the 182m crater rim takes about 20 minutes each way.
If you want the sunrise view, the fee and the climb time are only half the plan — arriving before dawn is what gets you a spot on the rim.
This post covers the fee, the climb, arrival timing, what your ticket covers, bad-weather closures, and what to do in Seongsan village afterwards.

Seongsan Ilchulbong Sunrise: How Much and How Long

Adult entry fee ₩5,000
Peak height 182 m
Climb time, one way About 20 minutes
Total climbing time About 40 minutes
Plan, including rim viewing 60–75 minutes

Adult entry is ₩5,000 per the official Visit Jeju tourism info page, and the climb to the 182m crater rim takes roughly 20 minutes each way.

Item Figure
Adult entry fee ₩5,000
Peak height 182m
Climb time ~20 min up, ~20 min down
Total climbing ~40 minutes
Whole visit incl. rim viewing 60–75 minutes
Family of four entry ₩20,000 (₩5,000 × 4)

The two numbers together define your morning: ₩5,000 gets you onto the site, and about 40 minutes of walking gets you up and back down.
If you add time standing on the crater rim, plan 60–75 minutes for the whole visit.
The sunrise from the top is regarded as one of Korea’s most beautiful — that is why the entry price buys a view most visitors fly in for.

For a family of four, entry comes to ₩20,000 total (₩5,000 × 4), so budget that line before you plan anything else.
If you are not a regular hiker, the climb is short enough that the fee is not the decision — the wake-up time is.
First thing to check for any fee like this is the official Visit Jeju page, because prices and hours can change and the exact seasonal hours could not be confirmed from a primary page within the last six months.

What Time Should You Arrive for Sunrise?

Arrive before dawn to secure a viewing spot for the sunrise.
This is the one timing fact that shapes everything else: the rim fills with people waiting for the same sunrise, so a dawn arrival is what gets you a place to stand.
Opening time shifts seasonally — earlier in summer, later in winter, to match sunrise — and the exact current hours could not be confirmed from a primary page within the last six months.

Before you set your alarm, check visitjeju.net on the day for the current opening time.
If your only free morning is a peak-season one, arriving at first opening rather than twenty minutes before sunrise is the difference between a rim spot and watching from the lower trail.

Is the Climb Hard? (182m in 20 Minutes)

The climb is steep but short — 182m of ascent over a roughly 20-minute trail.
That works out to about 9m of elevation gain per minute on average, which is enough to slow a casual hiker but not to stop one.
The crater at the top is a large bowl shape with an interior area of 129,774m², so once you are up there is room to move around and take in the view.

If you are travelling with children or you are not a regular hiker, this is doable — about 40 minutes of climbing in total, and the shortness is what makes it manageable.
If you want a longer or more solitary hike, this is a viewpoint climb, not a hiking route, and the timing is set by sunrise rather than by the trail.

What Your ₩5,000 Ticket Covers

The ₩5,000 entry covers a site that holds two designations at once: UNESCO World Natural Heritage and Natural Monument No.
420.
The tuff cone — 1.688km² of it — was inscribed as part of the Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes World Natural Heritage in 2007.

The crater and the surrounding 1km sea area were designated Natural Monument No.
420 on July 18, 2000, with a natural reserve area of 5,019,648m².
The site is managed by Jeju Special Self-Governing Province.

If you care about what you are standing on, one ticket covers both a World Heritage listing and a nationally protected natural monument — which is unusual for a ₩5,000 fee.
If you are only here for the photo, the designations matter less than the arrival time in the previous section.

Bad Weather and Trail Closures

The crater rim trail has historically closed during strong wind, rain, and high-wind warnings.
A sunrise plan dies quickly if the rim is shut, and the closure decision is made on the day rather than in advance.
Confirm the trail is open on your visit day — the official Visit Jeju page (visitjeju.net) is the place to check, alongside the wind forecast the night before.
If the forecast shows strong wind or a high-wind warning, have a lower-ground backup for your sunrise rather than betting on the rim.

After Sunrise: Seongsan Village

Seongsan village at the base of the peak offers haenyeo (female diver) shows and fresh seafood.
If the sunrise goes to plan, you are down from the rim with the rest of your morning free, and the village is the natural next stop.
The exact haenyeo show schedule and times could not be confirmed for this season, so check locally or through visitjeju.net before you plan your morning around a show time.

The address is 284-12 Ilchul-ro, Seongsan-ri, Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province.
If you have a full Jeju day planned, the village works as a breakfast stop; if your schedule is tight, the seafood alone justifies staying an hour.
If it were me, I would treat the village as part of the plan rather than an afterthought — the haenyeo show and seafood are the reason I would keep the whole morning free instead of rushing off after the rim.

If It Were Me: The One Decision That Shapes the Morning

  • Before you go, check the wind forecast and the day’s trail status on visitjeju.net — a rim closure is the one thing that kills the plan.
  • If you want the sunrise from the rim, arrive before dawn and allow 20 minutes up plus time at the top.
  • If you are a family of four, plan about ₩20,000 for entry.
  • If you are not a regular hiker or you have kids, it is doable — steep but short, about 40 minutes of climbing total.
  • If you are planning a visit this autumn (September–November), timing is good — autumn is one of Jeju’s two best travel windows, so plan the sunrise hike now.
